Faculty Laptop Initiative (FLI) Instructions

Faculty Laptop Initiative - Request Form

The Faculty Laptop Initiative ensures that Faculty are provided with a modern computing device to be used inside and outside of the classroom. The FLI provides a 3yr or 4yr replacement cycle (depending on model).

Please note that if you choose Custom quote from approved vendor through Unimarket (Dell, Govconnection, CDWG, B&H, Apple, etc) [Quote need not be from approved vendor for BYOD options]

Support for standard or custom models is detailed below:

Rapid replacement support model
* Replacement models of same/like configuration available for "warranty replacement" during entire cycle (3 or 4yr)
* Software administratively delivered
* Drive sync of all user files

Detailed specs of the standard model can be found in the ITS Computer Recommendations for Employees Knowledge Base Article.

CUSTOM/BYOD (Bring Your Own Device):
User assisted support model
* Manufacturer support for all "in-warranty" hardware issues during initial warranty period only
* Software administratively delivered
* Drive sync of all user files

The BYOD option allows you to purchase whatever device that you desire from any retailer and get reimbursed up to $600 (subject to payroll tax). At the end of the FLI cycle, you would keep the device. Note that BYOD still requires Dean approval. You will also be required to bring your laptop into Client Services so that it can be added to inventory. A valid receipt will be required for reimbursement. The BYOD option adds a year to your cycle, so you would be eligible for a new laptop in 4 years. It is recommended that you discuss with your dean prior to submitting this form. It is expected that the laptop you select will meet your needs for the duration of the 4 year FLI cycle (consider extended warranty & insurance). Out of warranty replacement would be a Standard Windows model. Please be sure that the specifications that you chose are sufficient. When in doubt, please use the specifications of the standard model as a guide.

Extend One Year & Keep

This option allows you to extend your current cycle for one year. At the end of that year you keep your current laptop and are eligible to get a new laptop. Note that your Dean will need to set you as eligible once the new cycle is up. You will NOT automatically be eligible for a new laptop. You WILL have to fill out this form to receive a laptop at that time. This option is only available if you have a Standard laptop.

In very rare cases in which there might be a true and unusual pedagogical reason that a faculty member needs a particular type of laptop (media studies of some type, for example), the custom option may be available. Please review this document which further explains. Remember that this option is rarely approved.
