About
The purpose of this checklist is to make the transition to your new computer as seamless as possible. We want to remind you that it is your responsibility to safeguard your data. ITS cannot be held responsible for any data loss.
Steps
Files:
- It is the data owner’s responsibility to backup data. ITS recommends syncing your files to Google Drive prior to transitioning computers. This will make the transition much smoother. What is Google Drive?
Install Google Drive on your Computer
- Some common places where you may have files saved that you should copy to the “Google Drive” folder:
- My Documents, My Pictures, etc.
- On the Desktop
- On the C:/ drive
- Check where programs that you use frequently “Open” from and “Save” to by default
- Copy all files that you want transferred over into the “Google Drive” folder.

Verify files are synced to Google Drive, by checking https://drive.google.com
Software:
- If you have special software installed, make sure to list it all along with license keys if you have them. Let the Client Services representative know what you need installed.
Browsers:
Email:
- If you use an email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.), make sure to copy the message folders (e.g., Microsoft Outlook’s PST personal files). Contact us for assistance if you have any questions.
Printers:
- Record (for each printer) the printer manufacturer, model, and IP address.
Other user accounts:
- If you have more than one user account on your machine, and you want to transfer each of them over, repeat the steps above for each user account.
