How to Replace Blank Cells in Excel with a Character

Issue

You are working with an Excel spreadsheet and need to replace a blank field with a character.

Environment

Microsoft Excel locally installed on a computer. This will not work on the web version of Excel.

Resolution

  • Select your desired range.
  • Click the F5 button on your keyboard.
  • The Go To window will pop up.
  • Click the Special button at the bottom left of the window.

  • Select Blanks and click the OK button at the bottom right.

  • Type the character you wish to replace the blanks and then click the Ctrl + Enter key on Windows or command + return on Mac.
  • You will see your blanks replaced with your desired characters.
